Thank you, MODOT

I picked up a friend one recent morning who had spun out on the ice and landed in the cables in the median on Interstate 70 near mile marker 40 close to Odessa. A two-mile area was littered with cars and pickup trucks off the road.

The Missouri Highway Patrol was out in force helping get these people to safety and other more fortunate drivers through the tricky area.

Before that day, I wasn’t convinced of the value of the cables in the median of the interstate, thinking of the constant repair costs and also that big trucks can seemingly drive through them at random.

It was pretty clear on the day I got my friend, however, that several of the vehicles could easily have skidded through the snow-covered medium and into the oncoming traffic had it not been for the cables.

Thank you to the Missouri Department of Transportation and Missouri Highway Patrol. I don’t say that very often.

One-step Social Security solution

To the Democrats and Republicans, you can save Social Security and Medicare with one small step. Stop paying benefits to the deadbeats who have paid little or nothing into the system.

I’m talking about spousal benefits to the people who paid nothing but who get one half of what their spouse gets plus Medicare even if they have not worked at all.

Stop telling the hard-working young people the system is broke when you are allowing it to go broke.

Slow down on fracking

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback recently proposed increased use of the controversial fracking process to facilitate natural gas production in Kansas, citing benefits such as creation of 25,000 new jobs.

I support the responsible regulated development of our natural resources, including oil and gas. But this fracking idea is ill-advised for several reasons.

Fracking consumes vast amounts of water (millions of gallons per well), which cannot be reclaimed and reused and which poses major disposal risks. Only last month, Gov. Brownback announced an initiative to try to recover our diminished aquifers and groundwater supplies, which have been overused for several decades.

Kansas teacher retirement pay

The Kansas Public Employee Retirement System (KPERS) Study Commission recently made a proposal that the right-wing legislators in Topeka are sure to embrace: dismantle the current system and turn it into a “defined contribution” plan that puts teachers’ retirement income at the mercy of the market.

This is unacceptable. Teachers in Shawnee Mission and throughout Kansas have not received a pay raise in two years and do not expect one in the years to come.

And now we want to decrease the chances that there will be enough money to fund teachers’ earned retirement benefits.

If we’re really “waiting for superman” we have a very long wait indeed.

Will the legislators vote themselves the same system? Currently, their retirement, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, is based on a salary of $83,216 (though they’re in session only 4.5 months a year). Taxpayers United of America calls this “legal corruption.” This while they plan to cut the teacher retirement system.

Write your legislators. Tell them you support adequate funding for Kansas schools and a secure retirement for its teachers.

Contraceptive controversy

Those who think the Obama administration should show more respect for the Catholic Church must realize there has been disrespect on both sides (2-11, A1, “Fighting a fire-storm”). These transgressions are not equal.

Unlike an institution, a woman has a heart, nerves, and a brain that can feel pain, despair and even terror. Depriving her of her right to birth control means she can be forced to bear a hopelessly deformed child or to put a child in jeopardy from an abusive husband or to face raising a child without any money.

This is disrespect bordering on cruelty. So let us recognize there has been disrespect on both sides. The Catholic Church is entitled to maintain its rules — but equally, the woman is entitled to reproductive care.

The administration was correct to guarantee she gets it. Fortunately, there is no additional cost for the service, because it is offset by the avoidance of pregnancy services.

Art of chicken

The Spencer Art Museum (on the University of Kansas-Lawrence campus) has given a grant to a young woman whose “art project” (called “The Story of Chickens” — to début in March) will use five living hens. We all are encouraged to get to know them before the end of the project, which will culminate in their public slaughter, which we are also invited to witness.

Top museums across the country have sensible policies prohibiting the use of live animals in “art.” But in Kansas, once again the world can see an archaic throwback. The Spencer obviously must realize it has made an enormous mistake (see the museum’s Facebook page) yet they appear fearful of being seen as a censor.

Those who love the arts, and desire continued public funding — have an obstacle growing bigger by the day. The Spencer needs to admit its error and terminate this project.

Teleprompter temptest

I read in letters to the editor and Midwest voices that many conservatives in Kansas City apparently have an issue with President Barack Obama’s use of a Teleprompter. Perhaps I missed it in the many Republican debates, but have the Republican candidates taken some kind of pledge that they would not use a Teleprompter in a State of the Union address?

Commentators like Rush Limbaugh pick up the gauntlet and use the Teleprompter as some sign or weakness. Yet most listeners to el Rushbo don’t realize that he too reads on his daily radio show.

He just uses papers instead of a Teleprompter. There are a lot of things about the Obama presidency that people can question, but the use of a teleprompter? Give me a break.

Unkind photo layout

You owe a real apology to the St. Luke’s nursing school. The Feb. 15 article, “St. Luke’s to open new nursing school,” about the new nursing school has photos immediately above it about pre-nursing pigs.

The young ladies at St. Luke’s College of Health Sciences’ nursing program are not pigs. But the photo shows pigs described as in “gestation,” which is “pre-nursing” in a pig’s life.

Remember the children

After reading about Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s agenda, I was very disheartened (2-14, A4, “Tax plan creates questions”). The tax reforms he proposes, the school funding that he is wanting to cut, the Medicaid reform, the food stamp program reform, all directly affect the poor, most of whom are children.

Remember, Gov Brownback, they are children, not choices.
